If you’d like to work as a desktop publisher, offering article publishing and other direct mail, advertising and marketing services, you could earn a handsome living - even from home. Desktop publishing services from the comfort of your home computer can include publishing of articles with text as well as creative designs and artwork.
Services can also include the publishing of magazines, advertising brochures, and newsletters. If you have a flare for the written word, you could also find yourself writing, publishing and selling your own article - or create your own blog or Web site and take those products online.
There are quite a few auto-publishing websites nowadays, where you can publish your work with the need for your own website - and some even enable you to earn money from the work you publish.
Prior to publishing yours or someone else’s articles, you’ll want to learn all you can about the publishing industry. Important components of your article publishing that you’ll need to familiarize yourself with include graphics, fonts, word processing, layout and pagination.
Word processing training is where your desktop article publishing training needs to start. You should know the ins and outs of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Pagemaker. If you intend to use a Macintosh for your graphics you’ll also want to train in Claris.
Take a good long look at all Word can do before you start your article publishing. You’re sure to find features you didn’t know existed.
A computer graphics class is a must. Your training should include gifs, jpegs and bitmaps.
Besides only Microsoft tutorials there are handy books that can walk you through the use of these various applications. Your local community college will probably offer continuing education courses for next to nothing.
If you are 50 years or older check out senior centers, senior organizations, or one of the lifelong learning centers that are cropping up all over the U.S., usually with college !

Before your first attempt at marketing your desktop article publishing services you must create a portfolio. Determine the types of products you want to provide for your customers and put at least one sample of each into your portfolio. You may have a text-only article, one that includes graphics and art, a brochure, a letter, a postcard, an e-zine and so forth.
