Are Your Children In Danger?

Quit Your Job: Make money from home!

By TriumphantMom

A few months ago I was meeting with some business associates. We
were sitting around the table talking and my then 12 month old
son was being the usual monster when I am trying to work. He was
wanting to play.

I would hold him for a few minutes, then put him down. He would
scoot around, grab something off a shelf or table and destroy it,
and then come back for more play time with daddy and his guests.
Of course, I wanted to continue with the meeting as uninterrupted
as possible, so I would hold him, give him a little attention,
and put him back down. Being the mischievous little boy he is, he
would scoot off again seeking out something else to destroy much
in the same manner as a good hound dog sniffs out racoons.

During one of his absences I began to notice that he had been
gone too long, so I went to look for him. I found him on the
floor of the kitchen, in front of the kitchen sink. He was having
a ball playing with the liquid dishwasher detergent bottle he had
grabbed from underneath the sink.

The yellow liquid was all over the floor, all over his clothes,
all over his hands and arms, and on his face. The worst
imaginable thoughts rushed through my head. How much of the
potent acid like substance did he swallow? What was going to
happen to him? What should I do? I quickly yanked him up off the
floor, pulled his clothes off him, and stuck him in the kitchen
sink to wash him off.

Understand, my heart was pounding and I was scared to death. I am
44 years old and this is my only son…. my only child! I had
gone through life always wanting to be a father, but believing I
never would. Then Brande gave me this little miracle. I love this
boy so much I will often break out in tears just thinking of some
of the things he does. And now, I was in danger of losing the
most important person in my life.

I washed him real quick, and dried him. But did he swallow any of
the detergent? He smelt stro!
ngly lik
e lemons, and now, so did I.
I opened his mouth to see if there was any signs of the yellow
liquid in it. I could not find any. I smelt his breath to see if
it smelt like lemons. I didn’t think so. But his whole body smelt
like lemons, and now, so did mine. I couldn’t be sure! So I
rushed him over the people I was meeting with and had them smell
his breath. They also thought he had not swallowed any.

Everything appeared ok. So, I watched him closely the rest of the
day to make sure he felt ok. As it turned out, everything was
fine. But, it might not have been.

Having Markus around is a real learning experience for me. That
day, I learned there are a number of things that I should have
done, but hadn’t.

First, I should have child proofed all my cabinet doors.
Secondly, even having done that, I should have put all the
hazardous chemicals out of his reach, just in case a cabinet door

did not shut property. And, I should have sought out safer
household products.

Every day we hear about how bad the environment is. Every day we
hear how the chemicals we use are poisoning our water, our land,
our air, and our home. We know we should use something less
toxic. But when you think your son has swallowed a mouthful of
something akin to acid, it drives the point home. To me, it was
like a stake being driven deep into my heart.

I know that I can not protect Markus from all the hazards of
life. He will occasionally get knocked over by our dog
“Speedbump”, or scrape his chin doing his belly-slide down our
stairs. I expect him to break a arm or leg at some point as he
grows. I expect him to have a fender bender or two when he starts
driving. And I know for certain he will suffer the pain and
anguish of broken hearts as he falls in and out of puppy love as
a teenager. These things happens to kids. But, I will be
dadblamed if I am gonna let anything happen to my son because I
was stupid enough to have some!
thing so
dangerous in the house.

According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers,
in 1998 there were 1,131,680 reported cases poisoning of children
under five years old. Even if you child is fine after the
incident, do you really want to go through the hell of
experiencing the incident?

I put together a web page on Brande’s web site with a bunch of
links to information that can help you protect your children.
You can also see a few pictures of Markus on this site. The URL
